i’ve been selling a few of things i can’t take with me to NYC on craigslist. today i sold my beloved pink dave scott centurion road bike, and an ikea shelf set + side table. a few people have also been interested in my little secretary desk, some other ikea shelves, and my little portable blue/white striped record player. so far it’s been fun to sell stuff on craigslist because of how quickly my things are going and how excited people are about their “great find”. i even realized that most of the things i’ve sold weren’t of much use to me the past few months. i brought my bike to toronto but never fixed it up, the shelves just hung on the wall and the side table didn’t serve much purpose except for sitting by my bed and holding a book or two.
the funn(i)est thing about craigslist though is when you start emailing someone and they end up in your gchat by proxy. it’s like, no, i don’t want to gchat with you, i just want to sell you my junk. for example, my road bike is really unique because it still has the original pink paint job and it’s the perfect size for someone short. today someone offered me $50 extra on the bike, so i told another person who was interested in the bike that she’d have to match that price otherwise i’d have to sell it to the person who offered extra. she then sent me an email about how she wouldn’t be able to match the price and how much the situation sucked because bikes like this are hard to find. i felt terrible about “letting her down” but since the move to NYC is so costly, the extra $50 would be useful. earlier this afternoon, when i got home after selling the bike i checked my email (for more CL buys!) and saw that the girl i hadn’t sold the bike to was showing up on my gchat O___O gulp! thang kod for invisibility. i guess the nature of CL being almost completely anonymous allows you to be an insouciant asshole, but i know this will certainly be weighing on my conscious until the day i get fucked over by the system myself.
this song by marika papagika is beautiful but so depressing and sad. apparently, she was one of the first greek female singers to produce recordings and coincidentally, she moved to NYC and began recording for Columbia records! she had her run in cafes and in the mid 1920s she and her husband had one of their own at 34th st between 7th and 8th; i’ll have to make it a point to go exploring there. unfortunately the great depression saw the loss of her recording career and night bar.
andy and i have decided to move on january 9th, giving us a few extra days to pack up than originally planned. at first we were thinking of taking a uhaul across the border but the only sizes you can rent one-way are standard and 10′ trucks +. we were going to go with the truck but when i was walking down the street the other day i saw one parked on the sidewalk and noticed that it was WAY too big for even both our things, including my desk and mattress. incidentally, we were griping to our friends kat & dave, when dave recommended using greyhound. i called them up and apparently we can include 5 boxes per shipment and it only takes two days! so greyhound it is. i’m pretty much packed: just need to roll up my mattress (it would be so much easier to just leave it, but it was custom made- like, special high density foam, hand-made zip cover etc and only 6 months old!), tape up some boxes, take my shelves down, and box my light up globe. andy has been working a lot lately so he’ll need more time to pack, but we’ve gone through his clothes so that’s a start. what, with being gone for two days during christmas and with guests staying over another two days for new years, the delay in our move will be to our benefit.
we’re so excited to move. i’ve got my placed lined up right by central park so i’m quite excited for spring to come so i can run in the park every day (or try, at the least). i have orientation on the 12th and classes start on jan 21st. meanwhile, andy has two contacts with HBO, one at comedy central, and a few others in the writing industry. i really think he’ll be able to sell his TV show because it’s smart, hilarious and well, written by the one and only andy! my modesty really seems to shine when i talk about his work, no? andy will also be getting a cell phone in NYC and i hope he gets an SMSing plan because i’m pretty skilled at the typetalk. i’m also considering getting a blackberry because i KNOW being able to connect to the internet easily will help me out when i’m lost in the middle of the city and can’t figure out which subway line to take. during my first visit to NYC in november, i probably called roxanne at least five times in hysterics trying to figure out where i was / unable to figure out which train i was supposed to take because apparently they like to switch it up to you one the clock strikes midnight. actually, one thing i’m most excited about is getting to know the subway system. toronto’s is so much easier and i’ll be sad to leave it, but to champion the craziness of the one in NYC will surely be a feat to celebrate.
